Two Trees and Marriage

ImageOut walking with a friend recently we came upon these two majestic trees.  On a shady trail, these two stood side by side and reached for the sky while clutching the ground for stability.

Two individual trees different in appearance, separate in several locations, yet linked – entwined, arms together in some places and apart in others.

In one part of the trunk the two trees come together, “unioned” and then with roots crossing over one another, dig deep into the earth, each seek nourishment and hang on to what feeds them, deep under the soil.

Some branches are bare, having lost or shed leaf while others are green and full of life.

Awesome isn’t it.

What makes these two trees (any particular marriage) work? What are the roots digging down into and what nourishment keeps them alive, separate yet together?  What contributes to a lasting relationship?

What do you think?

I love that those trees made it into your blog……the instant I saw them, they shouted of a metaphor of marriage to me…..I thought of your marriage – I just had to show them to you….
And who knows – maybe one day they too will be a metaphor of a season of life for me….I think I will save a photo of them just in case…
What I do know is that when I saw them, I was moved to tears….. two, unique, individual trees -very different, yet each with it’s own strength and beauty. Their place in the world? Individually, yes….and yet together – an absolute work of art. Only God could do that!! Two seperate lives merging – together drinking in the nourishment from below – and above, entwined together, weathering the storms – shouting out to those who pass by – we are a thing of beauty – we are what we are – WE. . And somehow because of their ‘togetherness’ they are more than what they could ever be alone. It is completely obvious to me that a heart shape is at the base of these two trees… for God….love for one another….two roots that must go deep…. deep down deep. A sense of Awe emerges to the Creator and Sustainer of it all!!
